When I looked in the mirror I couldn't see much of a change...most days. But my pants were getting tighter and tighter. And the mediums stopped fitting like they used to. At first I thought the clothes were getting smaller. But it wasn't that. It was me.

It wasn't until I saw a picture of myself in 2017 vs a picture of myself at the end of 2020 that I noticed how much weight I had really put on, and how much my appearance had changed. I was deeply upset by this. I had always been thinner, and now, I felt like a ballon that kept blowing up, with no way for me to stop it. That day, I vowed to make a change. But I didn't want it to be like the dozens of other diets I had tried and quit. I didn't want to eat in a deficit for 3 days and then binge eat a ton of pizza because I was sick of feeling hungry. So I came up with a plan. I would make a goal chart to track my calories, workout, weight and water intake, and I would log these things every day. This would keep me more accountable, because I would want to make sure I hit all my goals, and I would have to log it if I didn't. This ended up being a great kickstarter for me, and went a long way to keep me motivated. I calculated my calories on precision nutritions website, and based on my height, weight, age, gender and lifestyle, it gave me 1420. (I have since increased my calories to 1800 on account of going back to work and being more active.) I stuck to the deficit most days, but it was very hard for me in the beginning. For one thing I was always hungry, and for another, I was very addicted to sugar. So I had to learn how to eat in a way that let me stay full longer, and made room for cravings. The first thing I did was looked for low calorie substitutes. For example, instead of 90 calorie mayo, I switched to 35 calorie light mayo. Of instead of 110 calorie bread, 60 calorie bread. These tiny changes helped out a ton! Because I was able to eat more food, without sacrificing taste, or how much something filled me up. But I was still feeling very hungry in between lunch and dinner. So I decided to make my meals even smaller, so I could have 4 meals instead of 3, and more room for snacks. This helped tremendously, and took care of the hunger problem immediately. I also made room for treats. If I had a low calorie sandwich at work, I would pack chips as well to eat with it. I allowed myself a diet soda every day after lunch, and an ice cream bar every night. These little treats got rid of my sweet cravings and helped me feel like I wasn't being deprived, but was actually enjoying what I ate.

I also made sure to never punish myself for messing up, meal prep my lunches so I wasn't tempted to snack unhealthy instead, and give myself some flexibility for social events or dates with my husband. At this point, I am so much happier with my body. My mental health has increased tremendously, and I feel like I could continue to eat this way forever.
